The image above, taken July 5, shows some backfill behind the memorial wall with the foundation waterproofing complete. Additional backfill will be added to bring the grade up on the rear retaining wall.
More progress and good news this week!
The concrete for the end pedestals, flagpole base and curved walls has been poured and the formwork has been removed.
The contractor will utilize the next period of construction to waterproof the wall and provide the necessary drainage from behind the wall as well as connecting drainage from weep holes in the rear retaining wall and roof drainage from the adjacent building. All this drainage will be collected into a single underground conduit and routed to the existing street storm water collection system.
The Veterans Council was represented at the June 28th Day of Valor held at George Rogers Clark High School. A number of brick order forms were taken by attendees and others became acquainted with the project.
While at the event, word was received that a $7,500 matching grant was made available to the council. All donations and brick purchases from June 27th forward will count as a match to this grant, up to a maximum of $7,500.
Updated construction documents have been sent to the limestone fabricator. Maps have been created on computer for transmission to the fabricator for etching in granite. These will be placed on the end pedestals of the memorial.
The flagpole, flags and pole-mounted light have been ordered and are ready for placement as soon as they arrive. The flags will be flown and lighted during the remaining period of construction.
We are still working toward completion by late fall of 2024. We are still seeking donation and purchases of memorial bricks. Now would be an excellent time to make a donation or purchase.
